Old Yeller (Vault Disney Collection)

that's right. we watched "old yeller" at school the other day. how sad. a boy has to shoot his own dog...

well, its amazing how keen kids are on certain things that we aren't. they seem to look into our soul at times and can read between the lines better than we think. i've been especially tired this week. for one, our band was on the road the week before last and i came straight home to teaching all week. on top of this we had a show in town on wednesday, i have another job at night, and i'm in the middle of an online college class. needless to say, i've only had about 5 or 6 hours of sleep each night. but i say all this to say that this certain kid i work with, and have worked with for 3 years now, said something profound to me as we were packing him up to leave yesterday and i think he meant it fairly profound but more of just making a statement. i was trying to prepare him mentally for the 3 day weekend and him staying at his dad's house (he lives with his mom and siblings). right in the middle of me trying to get all of this across to him he looks right into my eyes and says "you're tired". i said "yeah kindof". and he said "no youre eyes say that youre tired". well i about lost it. but its cool that for some reason that took the edge off for me and i've had a great weekend so far of rest. God's so good to me.

well yesterday and today was spent at trinity.

yesterday i subbed for a first grade teacher. we had a good day and went through the lessons pretty well. during math i was to teach them a lesson on ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc. thru tenth). they just didnt get it and i just couldnt teach it, so it was a really bad combination. oh well. i did have an interesting conversation with a kid about the teenage mutant ninja turtles. well, basically he told me that splinter was the turtles' father and i said "no, he's their mentor and ninja master", and to be honest, it upset him a little that we disagreed, but in the end we laughed and rejoiced in the fact that they live in a sewer, eat pizza, and michaelangelo loves to party.

today i subbed for a music teacher and it was a flex day, a term here that means "a day students attend school for half a day, leave, and the teachers work the rest of the day". i had 6 classes in a total of 3 hours, left at lunchtime and still got paid for a full day. we basically watched silly videos that the teacher left and talked about going to the zoo. one kid asked if it was a movie about wolves because, you see, he liked movies about wolves. i, of course, said no and don't ask anymore stupid questions! you are five years old and i am twenty three years old! obviously, i didn't say that, but that was a question that a child asked today.

sigh. another day there tommorrow.

affectionately,
mr. josiah

another day at trinity. i worked in the special ed / learning lab rooms today with 4th graders and an assortment of k, 1st, and 2nd graders. mostly helping them stay on task and get work done. the new kindergarten kids are amazing. i love them to death. there's a girl in a wheelchair who inspired me so much today. she's only five but has the greatest heart and most determined spirit i've seen in anyone in a long time. she has no fear and such great joy. wow. where do we go wrong? what makes us think that we have anything to be afraid of? or bitter/jaded about? who do we think we are to go through life worried and complaining and upset about anything?

also, if you guys think of it, pray for a boy named palmer and his family. he lost his 6-year-old sister today. she had many tumors all over her body and had had them since she was born. i have no clue where to start in making sense of something like this. but i hope that he grows up to be a happy person and not a confused, sad person. i do pray that God will surround him with His love and grace.

today was spent teaching half a day in second grade and the other half in third grade at trinity. the teachers were doing reading assesment testing today and they will finish tommorrow. i was helping out where needed be. i mostly went over assignments with the kids and helped out how i could. i got to teach a social studies lesson on resources and communities and that was fun. i'm not all that bad i think. hmm.

also, in my attempt to keep up with the latest children's literature, i'm starting the "series of unfortunate events" series by lemony snicket. and please don't ask me if that's the author's real name because honestly i don't know and if i had to speculate i would say it's a pen name, but truly i'm not one for much speculation if i can help it. apparently there are movies being made about them with jim carrey and the kids are all into it, so i just wanna stay on top of things in my desperate attempt to relate to the kids and thus be a well rounded, relevant teacher, or substitute teacher, however you choose to look at it. i would have to say that my favorite sort of reading is in fact children's literature. roald dahl, the harry potter series, the narnia books, etc etc.

anyways, i hope this all finds you well and i shall return soon.

love,
mister josiah
